Xmms is a media player for the X Window System that supports Winamp skins and that has a sophisticated plugin system that allows for easy extension of its abilities. Xmms is able to deal with all common types of media files. You might want to have a look at the xmms-plugins package which contains a large number of effect, input, output, and visualization plugins for xmms.
QTorrent is a BitTorrent client that uses the Qt widget-set. It allows you to have several torrents open at the same time from within the same program window, offering you easy overview, access and management through a list-mode. Every torrent also has it's own page where you can control things like upload speed and upload slots. A page that shows some statistics of all open torrents is also available.
TorrentSniff is a command line Perl program that reads a BitTorrent .torrent file from the local file system or from a URL and reports on the status of the torrent. TorrentSniff is based on an early version of TorrentSpy. (Version 0.1.0.3-BETA, specifically.) TorrentSpy is much more advanced at this point, but is Microsoft Windows only. For comparing various .torrents to see which is best seeded (that is, which has the most full copies available for download), TorrentSniff is good enough. Authors: -------- Alan De Smet
"Cutter" is an open source program that allows Linux firewall administrators to abort TCP/IP connections routed over the firewall or router on which it is run. Documentation and downloads are available at: http://www.lowth.com/cutter Author: Chris Lowth
Small tool to adjust screen brightness on nVidia cards that supports SmartDimmer. Tested with nVIDIA Geforce Go 6200 on a Sony Vaio VGN-S480 laptop. Use at your own risk... The PCM register on the nVIDIA card was found using numerous register dumps in Cygwin under Windows and comparing the differing registers. The register is accessed using libbackend from nvclock and this setting will most likely be incorporated into nvclock in the near future, which will render this tool obsolete. Author: Erik Waling
Flrec (Fast and Light RECorder) is a simple audio hard disk recorder written using FLTK toolkit (www.fltk.org). It can directly record in wav, mp3, ogg-vorbis, ecc. Uses sox (sox.sourceforge.net) that is command line program for sound conversion. Sox must be installed in the system. Flrec should works on every system where SoX can play and rec. Flrec works, but is still under development. Flrec is free software, released under the terms of GNU GPL. Author: Matteo Lucarelli
tolua is a tool that greatly simplifies the integration of C/C++ code with Lua. Based on a 'cleaned' header file, tolua automatically generates the binding code to access C/C++ features from Lua. Using Lua-5.0 API and tag method facilities, the current version automatically maps C/C++ constants, external variables, functions, namespace, classes, and methods to Lua. It also provides facilities to create Lua modules. Author: Waldemar Celes

Real Random XMMS Plugin. The shuffle mode of xmms is not as I expected it. So I created this plugin. For using this plugin, the plugin has to be loaded by xmms and the shuffle mode of xmms has to be 'on'. The plugin becomes active if you are playing a song for a while. If this song ended it jumps to a random position within the playlist. Author: Martin Oberzalek
XMMS audio output plug-in for the Jack sound daemon. Authors: Chris Morgan
This is an implementation of Squareness as a Java Pluggable Look And Feel for the Swing GUI Toolkit. This implementation of Squareness was one of the reasons to start the development of Squareness. I wanted the Java programs I use to look like the rest of the applications I use. The Squareness Look And Feel is still in development. Some controls haven't been worked on and some are not yet fully finished. Nevertheless I'm using it without problems for some time now. Author: Robert F. Beeger

Entagged is an Open-source audiofile tagger. You are wondering what the hell is a tag then ? A tag is a piece of information stored inside the audio file that contains the title, artist, track number, and other data relative to that file. Every audio format has its own way of storing this data, the MP3 uses ID3 tags, OGG uses it's own tag format and so on (WMA, APE, MPC,...). This data is used by many audio players (winamp, xmms, ..) , to display artist name, album title etc. So what can Entagged do ? Entagged provides a convenient way of changing the value of these fields, either manually, or automatically via the freedb database. The freedb database is a server to wich you can connect, and ask about a precise CD (album, or compilation), if this CD is found in the database, it returns all the data needed to correctly tag your audio files. Originally it used only with CD, but it can also be used with audio files as soon as it only need the length (in seconds) of the files. Entagged can also do a lot of organization work. You can rename your files from their tag in any way you like, including complex directory structures. You can also tag the files from their filename, this avoid copying all the information by hand. Best of all, Entagged hides all the different format complexity, with one unique interface, you can work with mixed file formats eg. you can use freedb with a mixed album of WMA, MP3 and OGG files without worrying!
Free Music Instrument Tuner. Author: Gilles Degottex
xmms General plugin for using xmms as an alarm clock. Basically it will start playing at a given time and fade the volume up. Only really wrote this because I wanted the volume fading thing which is something my hifi doesnt do - its less of a shock in the morning when the music starts playing that way :) The options available at the moment are: * Time to start playing * Volume to fade up to * Time taken for volume fade * Optional shell command to be executed. * Load separate wake-up playlist (thanks to Daniel) * Stop playing if you ignore it (same here) * Choose the days for the alarm to activate, and the time for each day. * Show a reminder Authors: Adam Feakin Daniel Stodden
Freebirth is a free software bass synthesizer / step sequencer / sample player. The bass synthesizer is vaguely 303ish but also has other capabilities such as: * Three oscillators (saw, sin, sqr) * Phase offsets for each oscillator * Separate filter and amplitude envelopes * Separate tuning for each oscillator * Two effects busses (reverb and delay). Authors: Topher Lafata Jake Donham
madplay is a command-line MPEG audio decoder and player based on the MAD library (libmad). madplay will also read and display ID3 tag information, and further supports the relative volume adjustment information (RVA2) in such tags, as written by tools like normalize. Author: Underbit Technologies, Inc.
Find Duplicate Music Files detects music files that contain the same music, even if the files are differently named, and are in different formats such as MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA, M4A, and RealAudio and contain different or non-existent meta-information such as ID3 tags. The program operates on whole directories of music file at a time, or upon multiple directories. It analyzes them and outputs the filenames of pairs that seem similar, based on their audio fingerprint, or perceptual hash. Author: Kurt Rosenfeld
This tool tries to find a suitable clipping border for a series of gray images. It is very useful to automatically extract clipping values for transcoding a movie if the source frame is encoded with black bars. A border around an image is defined by a rectangular and homogenous valued area extending from each edge of the image (e.g. the black bars around a movie frame). For each image the largest clip border is determined and the smallest common region of the image series is returned. Empty images or images with no valid clipping region are ignored. To cope with noisy regions in the black border areas, the region finding algorithm does not simply cut away all regions with purely zero values, but it uses a threshold in the absolut gradient sum along rows and columns as a hint for the begin of real image contents. You need a frame processing tool like transcode to actually perform the clipping operation. Authors: chris@lallafa.de

GL Mixer offers a 3D visualisation of stereo mixing. The spatial interface isn't very space compact, but it looks cool and can sometimes be a more intuitive way to mix audio. Because GL Mixer is a JACK client it allows you to do all your mixing in one place, prior to final processor effects and output, rather than using separate pan & level controls in other applications. Future versions of GL Mixer will probably include things like MIDI integration and automation, which should make it more generally useful. More eye candy will be introduced at the discretion of the author. People who saw the Be Operating System demonstrated in the 1990s may find GL Mixer very familiar. Of course GL Mixer shares no code with that demo and hopefully as a JACK app it's rather more useful. Author: Nick Lamb
PHAT is a collection of GTK+ widgets geared toward pro-audio apps. The goal is to eliminate duplication of effort and provide some standardization (well, at least for GTK+ apps). Authors: see Authors
JACK bitmeter is a diagnosis tool for JACK audio software on Linux (and perhaps other systems which have JACK and GTK+ 2.x). As its name might suggest, the bitmeter operates at the bare metal of JACK's I/O layer, looking at the 32 binary digits in each individual sample. Think of bitmeter like the cable detector in your toolbox. You cannot use a cable detector to drive screws into wood, or to undo bolts, or measure the length of a copper pipe, but it's the perfect tool for detecting hidden cables in walls before you drill. You will rarely need bitmeter, in fact most JACK users will never use it at all, but having it and never needing it is much better than needing it and not having it. Author: Nick Lamb
Jaaa (JACK and ALSA Audio Analyser), is an audio signal generator and spectrum analyser designed to make accurate measurements. Author: Fons Adriaensen
VCDGear is a program designed to allow a user to extract MPEG streams from CD images, convert VCD files to MPEG, correct MPEG errors, and more -- all in a single step. Initially developed back in late 1997, the program has grown to do various extractions, conversions, and corrections on the fly. Cross-platform support will allow different machines to process and generate output that is compatible between one another. People requiring the need to transport their video materials will find VCDGear as a useful tool to assist them in getting the video to play on their computer or Video CD player. Authors: Dracore

Author: Stefan Palme
java4cpp is a command line tool that creates code for C++ classes that wrap existing Java classes. For understanding this README and for being able to really use this tool you should have at least basic knowledge about Java, the Java API and C++. Author: Stefan Palme
This is a C++ library that enables C++ applications to use HBCI4Java. HBCI4Java is a Java library that provides a set of banking functions to Java applications. With (HBCI4Java)4CPP the same set of functions is available for C++ applications. A better approach to use HBCI features in C++ applications is to make use of the libraries from the AqBanking project, because this is native code and does not require Java. But beware: the AqBanking-API is not compatible with the HBCI4Java-API, so if you are familiar with one of these libraries, there is normally no need to switch to the other one. For more information about HBCI4Java see http://hbci4java.kapott.org. Author: Stefan Palme

Breakage is an intelligent step sequencer and drum machine designed for live breakbeat performances. It uses neural networks and pattern morphs for fluid, high level composition. Write drum patterns in a step sequencer grid and use a neural network to learn the similarities between drum channels. The trained neural net can generate complementary parts to your live drum programming. Transitions can also be made by editing, loading a pattern from the database or morphing. Morphs - timed matrix operations - smoothly fade, add or subtract from one pattern to another. The pattern editor shows two patterns at once to allow transitions to be previewed. The currently playing pattern is shown with the central red circles and the next pattern is indicated by the circle's borders. Features: * Neural network pattern generation * Fluid morphing between patterns * Pattern similarity statistics * Future preview pattern editor * Grid based step-sequencer drum machine * Pitch and swing controls * Distortion effect * MIDI sync * Load & save sessions and nets * Mouse-over help system Is Breakage open source? Popeye is a graphical Java (swing) tool for helping a developer or a team of developers to make it's application multilingual (I18N). It was originally developed as a properties file editor. The Java language provides a language bundle mechanism to solve this problem without a lot of trouble. Such bundles consists of a set of properties files and each file contains a special language translation in a key=value style. In huge projects it can be difficult to hold many files up to date. At this case Popeye aims, because it reads all files and collect the translations for the keys. Now the user can edit, resort, remove or insert new entries. Apart from the java bundles there are a number of other solutions (for other programming languages), e.g. po or catalog files. Now - Popeye can read only the java properties files. But the current versions have some abstract internal layers which can handle any type of file (theoretical).

SmoothMetal is a wrapper for some of Sun's Java Look and Feels to enable anti-aliasing. Anti-aliasing is the process of smoothing text and images by introducing intermediary colours to fool the eye into believing that the resolution is somewhat higher than it is. Thus a black character on a white background is 'smoothed' with shades of grey. You can see this in Windows XP when using ClearType, or enable it in X11 using Xft. MacOS X and RISCOS users get it for free along with KDE and Gnome desktop users on Linux, Solaris and elsewhere. While operating systems have moved ahead and most now offer anti-aliasing, Sun has said it will not be officially offering anti-aliasing in Swing until Java 1.5. SmoothMetal allows you to get around this and make your Swing apps look just a bit better.

A dosbox frontend written in PyKDE. Rather than concentrating on dosbox configuration management over multiple games, this frontend concentrates on file management. This frontend is designed to separate the freshly installed files from the changed file, configuration files, and saved games. Every game entry in the frontend is split between two different archives. The first archive is a zipfile created upon entry to the frontend. This is meant to save a fresh install. The secondary, or extras archive, is a tarball whose contents are generated from an rdiff-backup of the leftover or changed files relative to the install archive.

Foxtrot is an easy and powerful API to use threads with the JavaTM Foundation Classes (JFC/Swing). The Foxtrot API are based on a new concept, the Synchronous Model, that allow you to easily integrate in your Swing code time-consuming operations without incurring in "GUI-freeze" problem, typical of Swing applications. While other solutions have been developed to solve this problem, being the SwingWorker (see also here for an update) the most known, they are all based on the Asynchronous Model which, for non-trivial Swing applications, carries several problems such as code asymmetry, bad code readability and difficult exception handling. The Foxtrot API cleanly solves the problems that solutions based on the Asynchronous Model have, and it's simpler to use. Your Swing code will immediately benefit of: * code symmetry and readability * easy exception handling * improved mantainability
Simply speaking, OCamlSDL is an attempt to write a software interface between the ML programming language and the SDL C library. This package contains files needed to run bytecode executables using this library.
Free Tennis, a free tennis simulation. The most notable features of Free Tennis are: * Real tactics are useful in the game. For example, it is best to take the net with a slow, low shot (backspin); it is best to play diagonal when you are decentered horizontally, in order not to give angles; you should get back to center and behind the baseline after the shot, in order not to be caught in No-Man's-Land when the opponent hits * The A.I. is very advanced and reflects those tactics * You have total control over the parabola described by the shot * The graphic gestures are realistic and elegant * Different players have different skills * The game is developed by a former tennis player * Free Tennis is Free Software (which means more than simply 'open-source'). It is released under the GPL license. Should you need another license, please ask the author. * For instructions: http://freetennis.sourceforge.net/manual.html Author: Maurizio Colucci

Disadvantages are that you have only read access to the repository, the repository needs to be public and have ViewCVS set up. Also, it adds a more important load on the web server, so try to use this tool reasonably.

The Tremulous game - 3D FPS/Tactical Strategy. Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more... Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the 'Armoury'. The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available. The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

Reads and writes archives used in many popular games. Great for mod development and game translations. Supports over 1300 games, with more games added through small plugins. Also shows file previews and converts them to different formats. Game Extractor is an advanced archive tool developed primarily to open and manipulate game archives. Game archives are typically proprietary formats developed by the gaming companies, and they often change between different games. Game Extractor, with the assistance of plugins, has the ability to read and manipulate many of these game archives that were previously unreadable, including archives from different gaming platforms such as PC, XBox, and Playstation. Game Extractor was built to allow users to work with archives in the simplest manner possible, while still including many advanced features that are not found in other archive readers. You have the ability to open archives of various types, add and remove files, and save your archives for use. You can also extract the files from the archives to your computer for editing and viewing, or you can use the in built previewer for quick access. Previews can be saved in a variety of formats - the conversion done by Game Extractor. Another important feature is the use of plugins. Until now, you needed to download a whole new program when a new archive type was developed. With Game Extractor, all you need to do is download a small plugin which works together with the program to allow access to these new archives. The plugin system has been developed to be specifically simple, allowing almost anyone to develop a new plugin without great programming knowledge. Game Extractor also comes with support for creating and using MexCom3 scripts - find scripts on the internet for use with various archives, or create your own script using the inbuilt editor.
